St. John Damascene (675-749 AD)

St. John Damascene, Patriarch of Antioch

He is one of the Greek founding fathers of the Church.  He was born around the year 675 AD in Damascus.  Between 754 and 787 he died at Sheba Monastery near Jerusalem.  He concludes the time of the patriarchs of orthodoxy and dogmatic systematisation. John Damascene is considered an important hymn writer and mystic.  He is the theological founder of the Orthodox "picture service", iconography and the icon (the veneration of the represented personality, the image of the archetype =Jesus Christ = likeness of God)  With the Seventh Ecumenical Council of Nicaea and the Council of Constantinople in 843 AD the icon was accepted into the Christian Church.
