Apostle and Evangelist John

Apostle and Evangelist John
Apostle John the Evangelist (Jean, John)

Proclaiming to be at the beginning and the end of the apocalypse with the words:
„I, John”, thus he is represented in large picture cycles of the revelation.  One may consider Prochoros as his penman and author of the three letters.  Yet the eagle represented in the gospels stands for his insignia, as confirmed by inscriptions underlining the flight of his thoughts.  Many legends of his workings in Asia Minor survive.  He is represented with John the Baptist, between them the lamb.  Historians researching his origins remain undecided as to who he actually was: a rich youth, whom the Lord loved; the author of the Gospel, the letters and the apocalypse, all in one person? Or was he “the disciple who testified to these things?” Or does he identify with Lazarus who was raised from the dead, or John who stood with the apostles under the cross at Golgatha?  Next to the simple fishermen, day labourers, laypersons and simple martyrs stood this outstanding personality: John the Evangelist.
